Shocking Art Piece

Our first assignment of doing a shocking piece of art is a hard one. There are so many things to think about when trying to come up with and idea. The one problem that comes to my mind is not pushing it too far. Alot of ideas can cross the line of being too controversial or too disturbing. I want to send a message with my piece, not repulse people. The theme that I want to incorporate is rape/abuse. I have a few ideas on how I could do this, I just need some feedback on if it is going too far or not. My main idea was just to get a barbie or two and dismember them with a Ken doll standing over them. This would be placed on a piece of wood that would have scratch marks on it and there would be blood stains. To me this idea seems way in your face like THIS IS RAPE. I want there to be some kind of guessing in it, I don't want it to be so literal. Then I was talking to a classmate and she said I could just use the bottom half of a doll and stick pins in it and have their be blood, but that seems to push the boundaries too far. I want there to be a compromise, but I'm having a hard time finding one. Any feedback or suggestions would be extremely helpful.

This is a sculpture by Lorenzo Bernini portraying the rape of Poserpina. I really like this piece because you can tell that the women is trying to repel him to no avail. It is obvious this is an image of rape, but its easy to look at. It doesn't go overboard.

Retreat

I'm very excited for this coming year in AP-3D, now more then ever. After last weekend's bonding with everyone and getting to know everyone better I'm positive this is year in going to be a blast. The weekend at Menucha was awesome and beautiful. I had a lot of fun working on my projects. Our guest artist was really interesting and gave us some really good insight on individuality. It took me some time to figure out that my project didn't need to look like/ be anything in particular, but after that I really had alot of fun with it. Something that was a little frustrating for me is that when it came to the Andy Goldsworthy inspired projects I had a really hard time deciding what I wanted to create. When I finally decided I ran out of time to complete it. I had found this awesome hole in one of the apple trees in the orchard and decided to fill it up with dandelions. I thought that the yellow filled in circle would be a cool contrast from the rest of the tree. If I had had about 15 more minutes I would have been able to fill it up all the way. It took forever only because I had to keep going and picking tons and tons of dandelion about every 10 minutes or so. The fact that I was unable to finish just makes me want to try something like that again so I have the satisfaction on finishing it.  I'm ready for the challenge of being in an AP art class and since I have had experiences with more than just clay I'm sure I won't have any problem completing my portfolio.

This image of an Andy Goldsworthy piece is similar to what I was trying to accomplish. Except that mine was yellow and in a tree hole. The idea is very similar. It shows the contrast of colors, vibrant against sorty of dark. It catches the eye.
